Imst – Gurgltal valley

In ancient times the Gurgltal valley was an important trade route and a commercial area in its own right. The Romans used the valley as a connection to the capital of the province Raetien, Augsburg, on the Via Claudia Augusta. This main transport route, named after the reigning emperor Claudius, was connected to many other routes forming a wide net of roads.

The Gurgltal valley is situated between the Fernpass (1216 m) and Imst (822 m), the capital of the district, in the south-eastern part of the Lechtaler Alps. The Gurglbach (Biger) river flows into the River Inn . The main geographical features of this region are humid biotopes such as moors and pastures, connected by dry pastures and the “Toma-hills” which are common in the upper end of the valley.
